American Eagle’s viral jeans ad sparks a partisan divide
This brand-driven culture war has ignited fierce discussions surrounding beauty standards, race, and representation. Some on the left have called out Sydney Sweeney’s campaign as nothing short of eugenics; others defend it as harmless way to further normalize genetic inheritance between parents.
TikTok users have quickly responded to the controversy, with one video garnering over three million views on TikTok alone. Columbia University professor Sayantani DasGupta joined in, asserting that this campaign serves as “witness to this political moment” while reinforcing an anti-immigrant, pro-white and eugenic agenda.

President Trump deploys National Guard troops to D.C.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser took a more deliberative stance toward President Donald Trump’s plans to seize control of Washington City Police Department and deploy National Guard troops, saying she understands his frustration over what he considers anarchic city conditions, but did not think an immediate increase in security would suffice.
Trump made this move after criticizing Democratic leaders for failing to take action against youth crime and homeless encampments in public parks, two issues he highlighted as proof of lawlessness in cities around America. Trump’s order could serve as a warning signal for cities nationwide that may face similar difficulties when dealing with homelessness and related issues as evidence of lawlessness.
Mexico extradites 26 suspected high-ranking drug traffickers
Mexican authorities reached an agreement with American authorities to hand over 26 alleged cartel members from Mexican drug trafficking organizations to American authorities as part of an exchange deal. These suspects are accused of importing tons of drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl into America as well as engaging in human trafficking and kidnapping crimes; one suspect is wanted in relation to the 2008 murder of a Los Angeles sheriff’s deputy and will not face death penalties under this deal. The Justice Department pledged not seek death penalties against any suspect.
Mexico’s attorney general’s office and security ministry confirmed the prisoner transfers. According to US Justice, suspects allegedly face drug-trafficking, hostage-taking, kidnapping, illegal use of firearms, human smuggling and money laundering charges.

Mexico’s president vowed to fight terrorism
US President Donald Trump’s administration is taking military steps in their battle against drug cartels by officially designating eight groups as terrorist organizations and permitting US security forces to act directly against any perceived threats on Mexican soil.
Mexico’s first female President warned of an invasion to their sovereignty by the move, with Sheinbaum vowing to seek constitutional changes that protect ‘integrity, independence, and sovereignty of Mexican nation’.
Legal experts state that designating an organization as terrorist can make doing business more challenging for its members in the US but does not give Washington authority to engage in wartime-style operations against it with arms.
But this move could cause further division in a country already feeling hurt by US tariffs and border policy.
