My first Riverfire experience was a bewildered wander up to the cliffs at Kangaroo Point, where I had been living for less than a month after a relocation from Cairns, to see what all the fuss was about.
Having found a place to watch the proceedings, I was somewhat stunned by the unexpected flyover of the F-111 jets, so close I could feel the heat from their furiously burning engines, complemented by an enormous crescendo of pyrotechnics along the river which, from my vantage point, was quite breathtaking.
From then on, I was of the mind that Brisbane certainly knows how to celebrate.
